Overview

The Paper Trials was my first group assignment at QUT focused on game development. The brief was to create a game that incorporated three themes: Unfolding, Triple Purpose, and Limited Chances. Working in a team of four, we created a fast-paced FPS platformer with an origami aesthetic. Each weapon had three distinct abilities with limited ammo, and gameplay centered around time-trial levels filled with enemies, wall-running, and double-jumping.

Admittedly, the game was ambitious, maybe too ambitious. It lacked polish in several areas and could’ve used more refinement. That said, it was a fun and valuable development experience. It was my first time designing a movement system for a shooter and implementing multifunctional weapons. This project sparked a lot of experimentation, which I’ll explore further in the reflections below.

Contributions

  • Designed and implemented player movement systems in Unity using physics-based mechanics and OOP principles.

  • Developed grappling hook and wall-running features to enhance mobility and gameplay flow.

  • Created versatile weapon systems with multiple functions to support varied playstyles.

  • Focused on giving players agency in how they approach challenges and complete the game.
